Simple how-tos, based on email to chapter webmasters

by Dan Thomas last modified Saturday, December 16, 2006, 11:06 AM

How do I remove a content item from navigation, for example, events?

Site Setup, Navigation, (uncheck the box for the content type), Save

How do I get photos to "stack" like on the Marin website?

1. Create "image" content
2. Change the parent folder's display to thumbnail view
3. Add folders in the same location
4. Repeat steps 1 & 2
5. Your subfolders will appear as stacked folders. Example here: http://www.amigosmarin.org/picture-store. Cool!

How do I get photos to display as thumbnail images?

Steps 1 and 2 above

How do I create an events list (as opposed to the calendar view)?

Create a smartfolder or edit the "events" smartfolder that may already be on your site, to display all published events on the site, with criterion "in the future" and sorted by start date (logged in as site editor, criteria tab)

How do I put a link to IO on my homepage?

Copy the link (e.g., from Marin site), Edit tab, paste it in, Save.

How do I add events to the website?

Adding events to the the calendar is fairly easy. In any folder (I would suggest using the root folder), logged in with manager role, pull down "add new item" in the green bar, then choose "event."

Fill out the calendar event item, making sure to choose which event "types" (volunteer, training, board, training team) the event applies to. You can hold down the control key to choose more than one. Once you've saved it, be sure to make the event visible by pulling down the "state" menu in the green bar, and choose "published."

How do I upload a video file

Load it as "file" type. It will then be downloadable for later viewing. The website has no streaming capabilities at present. An example is here: http://www.amigosmadison.org/photos/fundraising-concert-video.mov/view.

I added files/photos/etc. content, it shows up in the recent changes portlet, but not in the folder. What's going on?

If you see content, but your users don't, make sure it's in the proper state (e.g., published, or public draft). If you can't see it either, make sure you are in the target folder when you are adding the content.

I added an event, it's not showing up in the calendar.

If it's not solved by the answer above, check the event's year (2006, 2007, etc.) if you are publishing to a future year.

How do I get my new Plone website online in the first place?

1. Have a conversation with me
2. Log on to http://amigoswebsites.eastbayamigos.org/yourchapter and edit content, especially contact info, to create a baseline website
3. Register your domain name (e.g., amigosmarin.org) with Verisign or Network Solutions
4. Let me know your domain name so I can add a simple redirect to my site
5. Give me an email address to use as your generic webmaster contact address for the site.
5. Ensure that www.domainname.org points to 66.80.13.81

I want to do x with my website. How?

You can always ask if the functionality is built in, it often is. Also, Plone has hundreds of plug-ins (called Products, but they're free), which may fit the bill (blogging, bullten boards, etc. come to mind)

What else can I do with my site that mimics other chapters

1. Create online rosters of volunteers and parents that you maintain: East Bay, Marin
2. Create broadcast emails to target groups (e.g, vols) in your chapter (requires #1): East Bay, Marin
3. Create online calendar that categorizes events by type (volunteer, parent, board, etc.): Marin, Kansas City
4. Create online photo albums: Madison
